A tired, old man sat staring off
Into the distance, lost in thought
Upon a chair, under the sun
Next to a birdbath on the lawn
"Papa, why don't you come in?"
Smiled the fairy, up at him
She was beautiful and had
Wings just like a hummingbird's
Still at the moment, for she was
Perched upon the cement edge
Intently gazing upwards from
The little basin of the pond
"I wouldn't fit in and besides
You are just something in my eye"
"I'm not!" she shouted in reply
And then more gently "Won't you try?"
"You only want to laugh and play
And I have things to do today"
And trailing off just then because
He realized how tired he was
His chest was heavy and his head
Felt dizzy as the words were said
While thinking that he'd never known
A humming bird to come so close
So soon he fell asleep and dreamed
That he was with the fairy queen
And he a fairy who had been
A tired, old man once in a dream.
