Whistle's blowing, engine's humming
It sounds like the train is coming
Rolling down the railroad tracks
No time to lose or to look back

What is it like to go somewhere
Travel far, like a star?
I wish that you would tell me or
I probably will never know

Past the houses and the stores
'Til I can't see it anymore
Like some sad old song refrain
Never to be sung again

Why oh why, pie in the sky
Does that old train just pass me by?
Stuck on the wrong side of the tracks
And all my love letters sent back

The wind's so high it starts to moan
And I had better get back home
It sounds just like a child's wail
Or the whistle on the rail
