I'm the medicine for melancholy,
Elixir for a few
Unhappy souls who need a hand
To help to get them through.
A balm of Gilead for the pain
An evil world may brew.
I'm the medicine for melancholy
And I am here for you.

I have the power of turning into
Anything you need
And, though I'm only temporary
I can stop the bleed-
Ing of a broken heart unmercifully
Torn apart in two.
I'm the medicine for melancholy
And I am here for you.

I'm a flashlight in the dead of night,
An umbrella in the rain;
A warm coat on a winter's day,
Use me, taste me, drink your fill
Till darkness fades from view.
I'm the medicine for melancholy
And I am here for you.

Then, when, one day your strength returns
I'll go back on the shelf
Until the time I'm needed
By another like yourself.
Still, some small while, you'll feel a smile
As thoughts come into view
Of the medicine for melancholy;
How I was there for you.
